FAQ

Who Are We?

We are the BucksMont Squires of Song representing the Abington/Levittown, PA chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Organized in 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Society is now the largest all-male international singing society in the world, and was until recently known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop and Quartet Singing in America. The Society recently created a Society Associate position so we welcome women to join and sing with us.

We are a non-profit [501(c)3], fraternal and educational singing society. Visit the society website www.barbershop.org or the Mid-Atlantic District website www.MidAtlanticDistrict.com for more information.

What Do We Do?

We sing songs like "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Over the Rainbow", "Ev'ry Day of My Life", "In the Still of the Night" and "In My Room". Our repertoire includes show tunes, ballads and up-tunes, as well as seasonal, patriotic and spiritual songs.

During a typical year, we entertain for various senior centers, civic organizations and social groups. We put on stage shows and meet with other choruses that share our hobby. At year-end, you'll find us caroling at hospitals and nursing homes.

What Is Barbershop Singing?

Barbershop singing is four-part harmony, sung without accompaniment (i.e., sung a cappella). The parts, from high to low voice, are Tenor, Lead, Baritone, and Bass. The melody of the song is usually carried by the lead voice, with the tenor harmonizing above the melody line, the bass below and the baritone adding notes either above or below the melody. These four parts are sung together as a quartet or in chorus ensembles.

Many agree that Barbershop is the closest and best harmonizing of the human voice. You can be a part of it ... and get this, formal music training is not required ... a good ear and willingness to learn will carry you a long way!
